Recycling habits do not begin when children become adults.
They begin at home, in day care, in preschool, in the classroom and in everyday moments.
A bottle. A food scrap. A wrapper. A cardboard box. Every item can become a small learning moment. Learn Recycle turns those moments into play.

The Problem
Why This MattersRecycling can be confusing, even for adults. For young children, it can feel even harder. Different items go in different bins. Some can be recycled. Some can be composted. Some belong in rubbish. When children do not understand these choices, recycling becomes random. Bins become contaminated, good materials are wasted and children miss the chance to build better habits early. Learn Recycle helps make this learning easier. Instead of only telling children what to do, it lets them see, choose, sort, make mistakes, receive feedback and try again. That is where real learning begins. |

Early Habits
Helping Children Build Early Sustainability HabitsAt ages 3 to 8, children are curious, visual and ready to learn through play. They are also forming habits that can stay with them as they grow. By using Learn Recycle, children begin to: Recognise everyday waste items from home and school Understand the difference between Compost, Recycling and Rubbish Practise making choices and learn from friendly feedback Ask adults for help with special items like batteries Connect digital learning with real-world behaviour Build confidence around sustainability from an early age The goal is not only to help children get the right answer inside the app. The bigger goal is to help children carry that learning into real life. |

For Families
Supporting Families at HomeLearn Recycle gives families a simple way to talk about recycling at home. Parents and carers can turn everyday items into quick learning moments. A lunchbox wrapper, a milk carton, a banana peel or a cardboard box can become a simple question: which bin does this belong in? Children are not just playing an app. They are beginning to notice the waste choices around them every day. That awareness, built early, is one of the most lasting forms of environmental education. |
For Schools
Supporting Schools and Early LearningLearn Recycle supports teachers and educators by making recycling education more interactive and visual. It can be used during group learning, sustainability lessons, classroom discussions and day care activities. Children can watch, respond, take turns, discuss their choices and learn from the app’s feedback. No complicated setup. No special equipment. Just a simple, free tool that makes sustainability education more practical and more enjoyable for young learners. |

Child-Led Innovation
A Different Kind of ImpactLearn Recycle was created by Kiaan, a young Australian student who began developing the idea when he was around eight years old. He wanted to help younger children understand recycling in a way that felt simple and fun. That makes Learn Recycle different. It was not created from a boardroom. It was created from a young person’s curiosity, shaped by technology and a real desire to help other children learn. The impact of Learn Recycle is not only environmental. It also shows what young people can do when they are encouraged to solve real problems. In January 2024, the NSW Deputy Premier and Minister for Education and Early Learning personally acknowledged Learn Recycle as an initiative that uses gamification to drive genuine learning in an important area. |

The Change We Want
What We Are Working TowardLearn Recycle is still growing, but the vision is clear. Help more children understand recycling before bad habits form Support educators with simple, practical and free tools Help families feel more confident teaching children about waste sorting Give schools and early learning centres free access to a child-friendly sustainability resource Make recycling education something children experience, not just something they are told about |
Long-Term Vision
Where We Want Learn Recycle to BeKiaan’s vision is for Learn Recycle to become a standard part of early sustainability education across Australia. That means seeing it used in: 🏠 Homes
👶 Day care centres
🎒 Preschools
🏫 Primary classrooms
📚 Libraries
🏙️ Council programs
🌿 Community events
🤝 Partner programs

Measuring Impact
Growing in a Transparent WayWe are at the beginning of this journey and we are honest about that. As Learn Recycle reaches more families, schools and communities, we aim to track and share its impact more clearly. This may include: Number of app downloads and active users Number of schools and early learning centres using the app Educator and parent feedback Community partnership outcomes Improvements in children’s recycling understanding |
